Ingredients You’ll Need to Make a Breakfast Board

BAGELS: Pick your favorite bagel flavors. Plain bagels are always a win and then mix it up. Grab some everything bagels, cinnamon raisin, cheese, or blueberry. Don’t forget to mix up the sizes! Mini bagels are fun for the kids or so you can try a few different combinations before filling up.

SPREADS: Plain cream cheese it great and you can add other things on top for variety, but strawberry, honey pecan, chive and onion, and spicy jalapeno are all really tasty too.

TOPPINGS: This is where you can really have some fun and make your board pretty. Smoked salmon and red onion are classic options. Other great ideas are jam, fruit, Nutella, honey, coconut, peanut butter, avocados, bacon, and cheese.

ADD-ONS: Just because it’s not going on your bagel doesn’t mean it can’t be on the board. Things like grapes, orange slices, sausage, and granola will make your board more of a meal.

STEP 1 Put any spreads or cream cheese into small bowls and arrange them on the board.

STEP 2 Arrange the bagels around the board, I usually place them toward the outer edges. If you like, cut some of the full-sized bagels in half for those with a smaller appetite.

STEP 3 Fill the board in with toppings and add-ons. Arrange things so you don’t have similar colors right next to each other. This gives the bagel board some variety and makes it look pretty.

Tips & Tricks

  • Add all your favorite bagel toppings to this board. I usually think of adding in three’s – 3 different types of bagels, 3 different spreads, 3 different fruits, and so on. This will give  your breakfast diners different options.
  • You can omit toppings from the list below if that is not something you would normally use. Fill in the spaces with all your favorite breakfast ingredients. There are no wrong answers!
  • Make sure to pre-slice bagels and cut a few in half (for those with a smaller appetite) so your guests can dig right in and start creating their bagels.
  • Depending on how many people you are serving I would add 2 full-sized bagels or 3 mini bagel to the board per person. That will help determine how large the board or tray should be. You could also set up 2 boards – one sweet and one savory.

Breakfast Board FAQ

How do you make a grazing board for breakfast?

To assemble any board, you want keep in mind big, medium, and small. Start with big items, like bowls (that things will go in) or jars. These are good starting point to arrange other things around. From there, add medium sized items. This can include meats, big pieces of bread, bunches or grapes, etc. Then fill in any remaining space with small items like nuts, induvial fruit, olives, and so on.

After that you just have to choose a board theme and roll with it!

How do you keep a breakfast charcuterie board warm?

The best way to do this is to keep any “hot” items warm in the oven – set to “warm” or 200 degrees F. Then right before serving, add these items to your breakfast board. You can keep extras in the oven and replenish as needed.

I do recommend covering the baking sheets or plates the “hot” items are on with foil so they don’t get dried out.

Instructions

  • Transfer the cream cheese to small bowls or leave in the container. Place them onto the board along with a bowl of sliced cucumber and red onion.
  • Arrange the bagels around the bowls – I usually plan for 2 full- sized bagels or 3 mini bagels per person leave. I like to arrange the bagels around the outside of the board so there's room for everything else in the middle. You can leave the bagels whole or cut a few in half for those with a smaller appetite.
  • Fill the remaining space on the board with bagel toppings, bacon, fresh fruit, and mini jam jars. (see note)

Notes

If you can’t find mini jam jars, you can put the jam in small bowls and place them on the board when you add the cream cheese bowls.
